5 American whiskey 11

Eleven bourbons in tight formation — vanilla, oak and caramel with varying wheat-rye balance. The most internally coherent cluster in the collection. Small differences matter here: the wheated bottles sit slightly apart from the high-rye mashbills.

2 Bitter aperitivo core 7

Seven bottles orbiting the Campari axis. The full Fusetti range (Banana, Mare, Mexico, Original) plus Formidabile and Angostura — bitter-orange backbone, citrus and quassia, the muscle of every spritz and Negroni in the collection.

3 Aromatic crossroads 6

Six bottles tied by herbal-floral aromatics rather than category. Montenegro's perfumed amaro, Koval's forest-floor gin, D'Argo's mastic resin, the cinnamon-citrus tincture of Tintura Imperiale, and both light Martinis (Ambrato bianco, Vermouth Rosso) — the cluster's identity is its breadth.

1 Amaro-vermouth crossroads 4

Four bottles straddling the line between amaro and aromatized wine. Braulio's alpine herbs, Nonino's grappa-distilled bitter, Cocchi's chinato cherries and Martini Rubino's full-bodied red — sweet, bitter, woody and intense in equal measure.

7 Core gin 4

Citrus, floral and botanical — the gin cluster without the outliers. Tanqueray anchors the citrus pole, the three Japanese gins bring floral lift and a softer juniper presence. All four work in any classic gin cocktail.

4 Bitter & weighty 3

Three bottles trading on density and bitter-vanilla weight. Carpano Punt e Mes brings vermouth structure, Cynar the artichoke earth, Fusetti Bitter Cacao the chocolate finish — drinks built here lean into body and depth over brightness.

6 Structured complexity 3

The collection’s most unexpected pairing. A Virginia small-batch bourbon and an apple-brandy-based sweet vermouth from the same state — separated by category, united by structured caramel, body and a shared unhurried weight. A reminder that flavor doesn’t respect labels.

8 Japanese sake 2

Two bottles, one quiet corner of the collection. Low intensity, delicate umami, subtle fruit. Nothing else in the bar competes for this flavor space — which is exactly why they cluster alone.

○ Between worlds

Too light and orange-sweet for the bitter cluster, too amaro-tinged for the gin cluster. Aperol Spritz works because Aperol needs Prosecco to find its place — in pure flavor space it stands alone.

○ Greek brandy island

Muscat wine base plus Mediterranean herbs creates a profile with no close neighbor. Fruity enough to drift toward gin, structured enough to drift toward bourbon — but not close enough to either.

○ Venetian aperitivo bridge

Select sits between the gin cluster and the bitter cluster, sharing botanical character with the former and bitter-citrus with the latter. The original Spritz ingredient that predates Aperol — and more complex than either cluster captures.

○ Plum solitude

Double-macerated ume plums produce an extreme sweet-tart profile unlike anything else in the collection. Too fruity-acidic for sake cluster, too sweet for anywhere else. Nearest neighbor is Dassai 45, but the distance is significant.
